‘Living in peace with yourself is the only thing that matters’: Kasatkina confirms relationship with a woman
The Russian star spoke extensively about her private life in a YouTube documentary
Daria Kasatkina has confirmed that she is in a relationship with a woman.
In an extensive documentary with YouTuber Vitya Kravchenko, the Russian star spoke about her sexuality, which she has mentioned in interviews previously.
She said it was “pointless” to be closeted as it would draw all one’s focus, adding: “Living in peace with yourself is the only thing that matters.”
And she praised footballer Nadya Karpova for coming out as gay, saying: “It is important for the young people who have a hard time with society and need support. I believe it’s important that influential people from sports speak about it. It helps.”
She went on: “So many subjects are taboo in Russia…I think there’s nothing easier in this world than being straight. If there is a choice, nobody would choose being gay. Why make your life harder, especially in Russia?”
Kasatkina later wrote on social media that she is in a relationship with the figure skater Natalia Zabiiako.
Kasatkina – the war is a nightmare
Asked by Kravchenko if she was worried that she would never be able to go back to Russia having spoken so publicly about her sexuality, she replied: “Yes, I have thought about it,” before breaking down in tears.
She also spoke about the war in Ukraine, explaining her sadness at not being able to do anything to stop it.
“I can’t imagine what they’re going through, it’s a full-blown nightmare. I’d do anything I can but unfortunately that’s impossible and I think you [Kravchenko] understand it. We can’t affect it. We can’t change events that unfold. It makes you powerless, you feel powerless.”
