Petra Martic sets Lausanne final clash with qualifier Danilovic

Croat Petra Martic reached the final of the Lausanne Open by winning against Frenchwoman Caroline Garcia, the No 6 seed, 6-4, 1-6, 6-3 at Tennis Club du Stade-Lausanne on Saturday.

Martic, ranked No 85, will play Serb qualifier Olga Danilovic next. The 31-year-old is through to her first final in nearly three years.

The Croatian has reeled off four consecutive top-20 wins this season, including her 6-3, 7-6(2) triumph over 13th-ranked Belinda Bencic in the quarter-finals on Friday.

She will play for her second career title – she won her maiden WTA title at Istanbul in 2019.

“It’s a big deal for me … it’s been a while since I’ve been in a final,” Martic said, according to WTAtennis.com. “Olga’s a great player, another aggressive player, likes to be close to the baseline like Caroline. I think it’s going to be a very similar match-up like today. I have to focus on my game and just enjoy the finals.”

Danilovic – from qualifier to final

Danilovic became he first WTA player born in the 2000s to claim a title when she won the Moscow River Cup in 2018. Then 17, she defeated Anastasia Potapova in the first WTA final played between two teens in 13 years.

On Saturday Potapova played the victim again, as Danilovic took the 6-3, 6-2 decision.

In the previous rounds of the Lausanne, Martic beat Spaniard Nuria Parrizas Diaz, the No 5 seed (6-2, 6-2), Russian qualifier Erika Andreeva (6-4, 6-2) and Swiss Belinda Bencic, the second seed (6-3, 7-6 (2)).

Garcia, ranked No 48, defeated Italian Jasmine Paolini (6-3, 6-3), qualifier Leolia Jeanjean (6-1, 6-4) and Spaniard Sara Sorribes Tormo, the No 4 seed (6-4, 6-1) earlier in the tournament.
