Lamens loses seven games in a row – but still wins maiden tour title
It was a career first for Suzan Lamens in Portugal
Suzan Lamens won her first singles title on tour at the Oeiras Ladies Open, beating fourth seed Clara Tauson 6-4, 5-7, 6-4.
She led 5-0 in the second set, dropping three match points before finally coming through in the decider – despite being 4-1 down.
And she will reach a new career high of world No 134 when the rankings are released.
The two had not played each other on tour for five years, since the quarter-finals in Sandelfjord, when the Dutchwoman won 2-6, 6-3, 6-3.
Lamens had come through a potentially tricky semi-final, defeating Kristina Mladenovic 4-6, 6-0, 6-0, but Tauson was the first seed she had faced thus far in Portugal.
Tauson, on the other hand, had not dropped a set over the course of the week, but benefited from a walkover in the semi-final against top seed Bernarda Pera.
