Jiangxi Open: Siniakova saves three match points to beat Bouzkova to win fifth career title
In a three-hour, 33-minute marathon, Siniakova fought back to win her second singles title of 2023
In a marathon battle between two compatriots and friends, Czech Katerina Siniakova edged out No 3 seed Marie Bouzkova in three hours and 33 minutes to win the Jiangxi Open trophy at Nanchang International Tennis Center on Sunday.
Playing with a heavily bandaged left thigh, Siniakova came from 5-3 down in the second and third sets before finally winning 1-6, 7-6 (5), 7-6 (4) on a dead net cord which dropped over to Bouzkova’s side after a lengthy rally.
Siniakova, ranked No 60, had defeated Chinese wildcard Yuhan Wang (6-3, 6-3), Frenchwoman Varvara Gracheva, the No 7 seed (6-4, 6-3), German Laura Siegemund (walkover) and Canadian Leylah Fernandez (7-5, 6-4) earlier in the tournament. This is the fifth career singles title for the Czech and her second of 2023. It will also see her move back into the world’s top 50 when the new rankings come out on Monday.
Bouzkova, ranked No 29 and gunning for her second career singles title, had beaten Liechtensteiner qualifier Kathinka von Deichmann (6-1, 6-1), Russian lucky loser Amina Anshba (7-5, 6-0), Colombian Camila Osorio (6-0, 6-4) and Russian Diana Shnaider (7-6 (5), 6-2) en route to the final.
