Jasmin Open: Kartal into first WTA final after Lys withdraws with illness
Sonay Kartal benefited from the abandonment of Eva Lys (5-1) and will play Slovak Rebecca Sramkova for the title
Qualifier Sonay Kartal advanced to the final of the Jasmin Open when German Eva Lys retired at the Skanes Family Hotel Monastir.
Kartal, ranked No 151, led 5-1 when Lys, ranked No 126, pulled out on Saturday evening at the Skanes Family Hotel Monastir.
Sonay Kartal will face Slovak Rebecca Sramkova next.
Ahead of her victory, Kartal defeated Romanian Jaqueline Cristian, the No 5 seed (4-6, 6-3, 7-5), Japanese Mai Hontama (6-2, 6-2) and Ukrainian qualifier Yulia Starodubtseva (7-6 (4), 6-2).
The 22-year-old German won against Ukrainian Lesia Tsurenko (6-3, 7-5), Belgian Elise Mertens, the top seed (1-6, 6-2, 7-6 (4)) and qualifier Zeynep Sonmez (7-5, 6-3) earlier in the tournament.
