The Russian won four Grand Slam doubles titles in her career

Former doubles world No.1 Elena Vesnina, who returned to the tour earlier this year after having her second child, has announced her retirement from the sport in a post on social media.

The 38-year-old Russian won three Grand Slam women’s doubles titles (2013 Roland-Garros, 2014 US Open and 2017 Wimbledon with Ekaterina Makarova) and one mixed Slam (2016 Australian Open mixed doubles with Bruno Soares) in her illustrious career. Vesnina also won the gold medal at the 2016 Rio Olympics and the WTA Finals Singapore that same year in Makarova.

“What a ride this has been.⁣ It’s time now to say goodbye.⁣,” Vesnina said in her post. “Thanks to this beautiful sport.⁣⁣ I have learned so much about myself, about the world, I met so many incredible people through my whole career and it’s all because of Tennis.⁣”⠀

“Thanks to my husband, my family and friends for unconditional support and love, for always being there for me.,” she added. “To all my coaches, hitting partners, fitness coaches and all the people who was making me better as an athlete and a person.⁣ Thanks to my sponsors and my agents for believing in me.⁣⁣

And last, but not least, to all my Fans, I will miss you guys.”

I have learned so much about myself, about the world, I met so many incredible people through my whole career and it’s all because of Tennis.

Vesnina also reached the top 15 in singles (peaking at No 13), winning three singles titles including Indian Wells in 2017 and reached the semi-finals at Wimbledon in 2016.

Vesnina gave birth to her first daughter, Elizaveta, in November 2018 and returned after a two-year maternity break. After her comeback, she reached the final at Wimbledon in 2021 with Veronika Kudermetova, and the mixed doubles finals at Roland Garros and the Tokyo Olympics with Aslan Karatsev.
