Italian Open: Swiatek books spot in third round with double bagel of former Roland-Garros finalist
Iga Swiatek defeated Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova 6-0, 6-0 on Friday afternoon. She’ll play the winner of the match between Ukrainian Lesia Tsurenko and American Bernarda Pera, the No 28 seed, in the next round
World No 1 Iga Swiatek was at her ruthless best as she defeated Russian Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova 6-0, 6-0 to reach the third round of the Italian Open at the Foro Italico in Rome on Friday.
Swiatek, chasing a third straight Rome title, will face the winner of the match between Ukrainian Lesia Tsurenko and American Bernarda Pera, the No 28 seed, next.
Beaten in the Madrid final last time out by Aryna Sabalenka, Swiatek said she was enjoying a little bit of competition at the top of the game. “I literally just try to be focused on myself, but for sure the competition is pretty big this year. And it’s good because we’re motivating each other to improve.”
In the previous round, Pavlyuchenkova won against Italian wildcard Sara Errani (6-1, 6-1).
