German Tatjana Maria advanced to the second round of the Italian Open by beating qualifier Linda Fruhvirtova 7-6 (5), 3-6, 6-2 at the Foro Italico in Roma on Wednesday.
Maria, ranked No 65, will play No 10 seed Daria Kasatkina next.
