Italian Open: Keys through to round of 16 after Azarenka withdrawal
Madison Keys benefited from the forfeit of Victoria Azarenka on Sunday and will play Ukrainian Anhelina Kalinina, the No 30 seed, in the next round
American Madison Keys, the No 19 seed, reached the fourth round of the Italian Open after Belarusian Victoria Azarenka, the No 14 seed, withdrew before the match at the Foro Italico in Rome on Sunday due to a right-leg injury.
Keys, ranked No 23, will play Ukrainian Anhelina Kalinina, the No 30 seed, next.
In the previous round of the Rome tournament, the American won against Pole qualifier Magdalena Frech (6-3, 6-2).
Azarenka, ranked No 17, beat American Sloane Stephens (6-4, 6-3) in the previous round of the Rome tournament.
She came to Italy after controversy in Madrid where she and doubles partner Beatriz Haddad Maia were not allowed to speak in their trophy ceremony after beating Coco Gauff and Jessica Pegula.
