Ons Jabeur suffered another disappointing early exit as she was beaten 7-5, 2-6, 6-4 by American Sofia Kenin in the second round of the Italian Open at the Foro Italico in Rome on Friday afternoon.

The No 8 seed reached the quarter-finals in Madrid but is now just 6-9 on the season, struggling for form heading toward the French Open, which begins at Roland-Garros on May 26.

For former Australian Open champion and Roland-Garros runner-up Kenin, ranked No 58, it’s just her third win on clay over a top-10 opponent.

The American will face the winner of the match between Slovak qualifier Rebecca Sramkova and No 26 seed Katie Boulter next.

The American defeated Italian Lucia Bronzetti (6-3, 6-2) ahead of her victory.
