Frenchwoman Caroline Garcia, the No 5 seed, advanced to the third round of the Italian Open by edging out Romanian Ana Bogdan 6-4, 3-6, 7-5 at the Foro Italico in Rome on Thursday evening.
Garcia, ranked No 4, will face Colombian qualifier Camila Osorio next.
Bogdan, ranked No 59, defeated Japanese qualifier Nao Hibino (7-5, 6-0) in the previous round of the Rome tournament.
