Indian Wells WTA: Lucky loser Kartal keeps run going, reaches last 16

Lucky loser Sonay Kartal beat Russian Polina Kudermetova 7-5, 6-3 to advance to the last 16 of the Indian Wells WTA 1000 in California on Monday.
Kartal, ranked No 83, will play the winner of the match between Belarusian Aryna Sabalenka, the top seed, and Italian Lucia Bronzetti next.
In the previous rounds of the Indian Wells tournament, Sonay Kartal won against American qualifier Varvara Lepchenko (7-6 (6), 6-2) and Brazilian Beatriz Haddad Maia, the No 16 seed (6-2, 6-1).
Kudermetova, ranked No 60, defeated American qualifier Claire Liu (6-4, 6-2) and No 20 seed Ekaterina Alexandrova (7-5, 6-2) earlier in the tournament.
