Indian Wells: Vondrousova upsets Jabeur for the second time this year to reach last 16
The Czech left-hander will play countrywoman Karolina Muchova in the next round
Czech Marketa Vondrousova scored a second successive win over Tunisian Ons Jabeur, the No 4 seed, in 2023 to reach the last 16 of the BNP Paribas Open in Indian Wells on Monday.
The 23-year-old left hander from the Czech Republic had defeated Jabeur in three sets in the second round of the Australian Open in January. She carried that confidence into Monday’s match to come out a 7-6 (5), 6-4 winner.
With this, the head-to-head between the two players is now tied at 3-3.
Now ranked No 105 but a former top 15 player with a French Open runner-up finish to her name, Vondrousova will play fellow Czech Karolina Muchova next.
In the previous rounds of the tournament, Vondrousova beat Canadian Rebecca Marino (6-2, 6-2) and No 28 seed Marie Bouzkova (6-1, 6-1).
Jabeur, ranked No 4 in the world, was playing her first tournament since that loss in Melbourne after undergoing minor surgery last month. The Tunisian, who defeated Pole lucky loser Magdalena Frech (4-6, 6-4, 6-1) in the previous round, was evasive about the details of her surgery in her post match press conference after her win over Frech.
