World No 1 Swiatek survives Andreescu test to reach last 16 in Indian Wells; Raducanu next
Iga Swiatek won against Bianca Andreescu 6-3, 7-6 (1) on Monday night and will play Emma Raducanu in the next round.
Pole Iga Swiatek, the top seed, survived a tough test of her title credentials at the BNP Paribas Open in Indian Wells on Monday as she beat Canadian Bianca Andreescu 6-3, 7-6 (1)to reach the last 16.
The world No 1 (1) needed more than two hours to clinch her place in round four, where she will meet Britain’s Emma Raducanu, like Andreescu, another former US Open champion.
“I’m really happy that I actually played such a tight match, because now I see how I can handle those situations after couple of matches that were kind of one way,” Swiatek said.
“So I think we both played well. I’m happy that in those important moments I was the one that was more solid.”
The 21-year-old Pole beat American Claire Liu (6-0, 6-1) in her opening match. In the previous round, Andreescu, ranked No 36, beat American wildcard Peyton Stearns (4-6, 6-4, 6-3).
