German Tatjana Maria won against Dutchwoman Arantxa Rus 7-6 (5), 6-2 to advance to the second round of the Indian Wells at the Indian Wells Tennis Garden on Wednesday evening.
Maria, ranked No 46, will face No 13 seed Jasmine Paolini next.
