Indian Wells: American Liu wins, to face top-ranked Swiatek in second round

American Claire Liu moved into the second round of the BNP Paribas Open in Indian Wells by defeating Slovak lucky loser Anna Karolina Schmiedlova 7-6 (5), 6-3 on Thursday.

The reward for 56th ranked Liu is a second round meeting against top seed and world No 1 Iga Swiatek, of Poland.
