Swiatek’s title defence and bakery opens at Indian Wells as she downs Garcia

Pole Iga Swiatek, the second seed, won against Frenchwoman Caroline Garcia 6-2, 6-0 to move into the third round of the Indian Wells WTA 1000 at the Indian Wells Tennis Garden on Friday.

Swiatek needed just a little over an hour to overcome Garcia’s resistance.

She did it on the back three aces and twice as many break-point conversions, averaging 75 percent on the second-serve return. She won nine out of the last ten points to cross the finish line.

“I’m happy that I was solid until the end,” Swiatek said during her press conference later. “And I’m just happy that I adjusted to the conditions well. First matches are not easy, and didn’t know what to expect from Caro, but I’m happy that I could dominate from the beginning.

“I’m solid no matter what the score is, and I don’t take, you know, next games for granted. If I’m leading even 4-0, I know that I should keep playing the same way and keep the same attitude to just win the match.”

Swiatek, ranked No 2, will face Ukrainian Dayana Yastremska next.

Garcia, ranked No 71, defeated American wildcard Bernarda Pera (6-3, 6-4) in the previous round of the Indian Wells tournament.
