Indian Wells WTA 1000: Mertens advances to third round

Belgian Elise Mertens, the No 28 seed, won against Australian qualifier Kimberly Birrell 6-4, 7-5 to move into the third round of the Indian Wells WTA 1000 at the Indian Wells Tennis Garden on Saturday.

Mertens, ranked No 28, will face American Madison Keys, the No 5 seed, next.

In the previous round of the Indian Wells tournament, Birrell, ranked No 76, defeated Swiss qualifier Viktorija Golubic (6-4, 6-4).
