Iasi Open: Andreeva wins first WTA Tour title
Mirra Andreeva won the final on Friday evening against Elina Avanesyan.
Top seed Mirra Andreeva won her first WTA Tour title when she picked up the trophy at the Iasi Open as Elina Avanesyan retired on Friday evening at the Ciric Sports Base.
Andreeva, ranked No 32, led 5-7, 7-5, 4-0 when Avanesyan, ranked No 76, pulled out at the Ciric Sports Base on Friday evening.
In a touching on-court speech, the 17-year-old praised her own efforts. “I would like to thank me, for always fighting to the end, especially today in such a tough battle with Elina. And I would also like to thank me for not quitting, and fighting my ass off. So thanks to me, thanks to everyone for this week, it was an amazing week. For sure it’s going to stay in my heart for a very long time.”
Ahead of her victory, Mirra Andreeva beat German Noma Noha Akugue (6-1, 6-2), Belarusian Aliaksandra Sasnovich (6-1, 6-3), Croat lucky loser Lea Boskovic (6-2, 6-0) and Serb Olga Danilovic (3-6, 6-3, 7-6 (1)).
Elina Avanesyan defeated Spaniard Leyre Romero Gormaz (6-1, 6-2), Croat Petra Martic (6-2, 5-7, 6-4), Romanian Jaqueline Cristian, the No 3 seed (7-5, 6-4) and Frenchwoman Chloe Paquet (6-2, 6-3) earlier in the tournament.
