Russian Maria Timofeeva defeated Swiss qualifier Simona Waltert 7-5, 7-6 (3) to advance to the second round of the Hungarian Open at Római Tennis Academy in Budapest on Monday afternoon.
Timofeeva, ranked No 103, will face Belarusian Aliaksandra Sasnovich next.
