Hungarian Open: Shnaider into final to face Sasnovich
The Russian defeated German Eva Lys 6-3, 6-3 in the semi-finals on Saturday
Russian Diana Shnaider, the top seed, defeated German Eva Lys 6-3, 6-3 to reach the final of the Hungarian Open at Római Tennis Academy in Budapest on Saturday.
Shnaider, ranked No 28 and through to her third final of the season, will play Belarusian Aliaksandra Sasnovich next. The two have met once before with the Russian winning that encounter in straight sets in Doha earlier this year.
Shnaider is aiming to become the first player to win a WTA title on all three surfaces – grass, hard and clay – this year.
Ahead of her win today, the 20-year-old won against Hungarian wildcard Fanny Stollar (6-3, 3-6, 6-4), qualifier Ekaterina Makarova (6-3, 6-3) and German lucky loser Ella Seidel (6-4, 6-2).
Lys, ranked No 129, won against Argentinian Nadia Podoroska, the No 6 seed (6-3, 6-0), American Bernarda Pera (7-6 (6), 4-1 ret.) and Slovak Rebecca Sramkova (4-6, 6-3, 7-6 (5)) earlier in the week.
