Hungarian Open: Avanesyan battles past Masarova to book spot in last eight

Russian Elina Avanesyan beat Spaniard Rebeka Masarova 2-6, 7-5, 6-1 to reach the quarter-finals of the Hungarian Open at Római Tennis Academy in Budapest.

Avanesyan, ranked No 75, will face the winner of the match between Slovak Anna Karolina Schmiedlova and Spaniard Sara Sorribes Tormo, the No 4 seed, next.

The 21-year-old Russian beat Pole Magdalena Frech, the No 5 seed (7-6 (5), 6-4) in the previous round of the Budapest tournament.

During the first round of the Budapest tournament, Masarova, ranked No 117, won against Hungarian wildcard Natalia Szabanin (6-2, 6-3).
