Hong Kong Open: Yue beats Kenin to reach semi-finals
The Chinese woman will meet the winner of the match between Russian Anastasia Zakharova and second seed Katie Boulter in the next round
Chinese Yuan Yue, the No 6 seed, defeated American Sofia Kenin 6-3, 6-3 to advance to the semi-finals of the Hong Kong Open at Victoria Park, Causeway Bay on Friday.
With the win, the Chinese player improves to 2-0 lifetime against Kenin and advanced to her third WTA semi-finals of the season (fourth overcall in her career). It also marked her 28th win of the season (prior to this year, Yue had won only nine matches at the WTA Tour level).
Yue, ranked No 45, will face the winner of the match between Russian Anastasia Zakharova and second seed Katie Boulter next.
Earlier in the week, the Chinese player won against Romanian wildcard Simona Halep (6-3, 6-3) and Japanese Nao Hibino (4-6, 7-5, 6-2).
Kenin, ranked No 88, won against Japanese qualifier Mei Yamaguchi (6-4, 6-4) and Frenchwoman Jessika Ponchet (7-5, 6-4) in the previous rounds of the tournament.
