Hong Kong Open: Pavlyuchenkova upsets second seed Haddad Maia to reach last eight
The former world No 11 beat Beatriz Haddad Maia 7-5, 1-6, 6-1 in the second round on Thursday
Russia’s Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova upset Brazilian Beatriz Haddad Maia, the second seed, 7-5, 1-6, 6-1 to move into the quarter-finals of the Hong Kong Open on Thursday.
Pavlyuchenkova, ranked No 61 in the world, hit an incredible 43 winners en route to her win and will face Katerina Siniakova next. This was the 72nd career top 20 win for the 32-year-old Russian, who was ranked No 213 this time last year as she began her comeback from a long injury lay-off.
Ahead of her win today, the former world No 11, beat Croat Jana Fett (6-0, 6-0).
Haddad Maia, ranked No 20, edged out Belarusian Aliaksandra Sasnovich (7-6 (3), 3-6, 7-6 (3)) earlier in the week.
