Hong Kong Open: Mertens makes last eight, to face Trevisan next

Belgian Elise Mertens, the No 3 seed, defeated Russian qualifier Sofya Lansere 6-3, 7-6 (5) to advance to the quarter-finals of the Hong Kong Open on Thursday.

Mertens, ranked No 41 in the world, will face Italian Martina Trevisan, the No 6 seed, next.

The Belgian, a former world No 12, won against Australian qualifier Daria Saville (6-1, 6-4) earlier in the week.

In the previous round tournament, Lansere, ranked No 271, had won against wildcard Hong Yi Cody Wong (6-4, 6-0). The Russian had won eight singles matches in a row on tour, having won the ITF W25 title in Kyoto last month.
