Russian Anna Blinkova, the No 5 seed, moved into the second round of the Hong Kong Open when Kazakh Yulia Putintseva retired on Tuesday.
Blinkova, ranked No 37, led 6-4, 2-6, 5-1 when Putintseva, ranked No 68, pulled out.
The Russian will face Australian Priscilla Hon next.
