WTA Hobart: Navarro beats two-time champion Mertens to win first title
Navarro beats top seeded Mertens 6-1, 4-6, 7-5 in the final
American Emma Navarro, the second seed, won the WTA Hobart International title by edging out Belgian Elise Mertens, the top seed, 6-1, 4-6, 7-5 at the Hobart’s Domain Tennis Centre on Saturday.
Navarro won the match in two hours and 48 minutes to beat the two-time champion from Belgium for her first WTA singles title.
Ahead of her win today, Navarro, ranked No 31, defeated Frenchwoman Clara Burel (4-6, 6-3, 6-3), Pole qualifier Magdalena Frech (6-3, 6-3), Bulgarian lucky loser Viktoriya Tomova (4-6, 6-3, 6-2) and Chinese qualifier Yue Yuan (6-4, 6-3).
Mertens, ranked No 29 in the world, beat American Danielle Collins (6-2, 6-3), Slovak qualifier Anna Karolina Schmiedlova (6-2, 6-3), Dutchwoman Arantxa Rus (7-5, 6-0) and Australian wildcard Daria Saville (6-4, 4-6, 7-5) earlier in the week.
