Swiatek : “They say bakeries should be closed on New Year’s Eve, but here we are”
The smell of fresh bread is wafting through the United Cup this week as Iga Swiatek gets about her work in earnest
It’s all downhill from here for Poland’s Iga Swiatek. She’s already peaked for 2024, by delivering an absolute ripper of a line in her on-court interview at the United Cup on Monday.
Having just won her mixed doubles match with Hubert Hurkacz against Spain’s Sara Sorribes Tormo and Alejendro Davidovich Fokina 6-0, 6-0, Swiatek was asked how she felt about the victory.
“I’m happy that I have another chef in the bakery,” was the 22-year-old’s response.
Swiatek embracing her identity as the WTA’s bagel factory
Swiatek’s comment was a reference to “bageling” a player, the slang for when a set is won 6-0. The world No 1 executed this feat an incredible 23 times in 2023, more than the next two best players on the WTA Tour combined.
However, she has at times been hesitant to dwell on her dominance, labeling comments about her being a “bagel factory” as disrespectful and refusing to engage in discussion on the topic.
This year, it seems, Swiatek has woken up and chosen violence. Or should we say, baking.
“On Twitter they say bakeries should be closed on New Year’s Eve,” Swiatek continued in her post-match comments. “But here we are.”
All her mixed doubles partner Hurkacz could do was stand to the side and smile while Swiatek dropped bombs. It’s quite likely this will be all that many of her opponents will be able to muster as well this January at the upcoming Australian Open in Melbourne, where the Pole is seeking her maiden title.
