Guadalajara Open: Rakhimova reaches quarter-finals after Azarenka retires injured

Russian Kamilla Rakhimova moved into the last eight of the Guadalajara Open when Belarusian Victoria Azarenka, the No 3 seed, retired at the Panamerican Tennis Center on Wednesday.

Rakhimova, ranked No 89, led 6-2, 3-0 when Azarenka, ranked No 19, pulled out on Wednesday evening at the Panamerican Tennis Center.

The Belarusian took a medical timeout after the first game of the second set, with what appeared to be a right shoulder issue getting treated. While she played on for two more games, Azarenka retired at the next change of ends.

Rakhimova will face the winner of the match between Russian Veronika Kudermetova, the No 7 seed, and Colombian Camila Osorio next.

Ahead of her victory, Kamilla Rakhimova defeated Serb qualifier Aleksandra Krunic (7-5, 6-0).
