WTA Guadalajara: Andreescu upsets Kvitova; returns to top 50
Bianca Andreescu will face the winner of the match between American Jessica Pegula, the No 3 seed, and Kazakh Elena Rybakina in the next round
Former US Open champion Bianca Andreescu upset 16th seeded Czech Petra Kvitova in three sets to reach the last 16 at the Guadalajara Open at the Centro Panamericano de Tenis on Tuesday.
The Canadian came from a set down to win 3-6, 6-2, 6-0 to win in two hours and 11 minutes against the two-time Grand Slam champion.
This was the second consecutive win over a higher-ranked player for Andreescu, who had defeated 36th-ranked Swiss Jil Teichmann (6-2, 6-4) in the first round.
After dropping to No 121 in the world, Andreescu returns to top 50 next week
With the win, Andreescu, currently ranked No 59, will move back into the top 50 of the world rankings next week.
The 22-year-old had started the 2022 season at No 46 but missed the first three months of the season after saying she wanted to take a break following the Indian Wells event in October to recover from a difficult season. That break had seen her ranking drop to No 121 in April, when she played her first event of the season in Stuttgart.
Andreescu will play the winner of the match between American Jessica Pegula, the No 3 seed, and Kazakh Elena Rybakina next.
