Guadalajara Open Akron: Kenin advances to quarter-finals

American Sofia Kenin won against Latvian Jelena Ostapenko, the No 6 seed, 6-4, 7-5 to move into the quarter-finals of the Guadalajara Open Akron on Wednesday evening.
The American gets her fifth top-20 win of the season and she has now won seven of her last eight matches.
She improves to 2-2 lifetime against Ostapenko, notching the win in one hour and 44 minutes.
The 24-year-old American saved four of five break points and won 23 of 35 points against Ostapenko’s second serve. She broke for 2-1 in the opening set and never looked back. In the second set the 2020 Australian Open champion rallied from 3-0 down, then converted her fifth break point of the 11th game to break for 6-5 in the second.
She saved a break point, and converted her third match point to finish off the match in the next game.
Kenin, ranked No 53, will play the winner of the match between American Emma Navarro and Canadian Leylah Fernandez next.
Kenin hit 19 winners against three unforced errors; Ostapenko hit 36 winners and 25 unforced errors.
The American defeated Canadian qualifier Carol Zhao (6-4, 6-3) and Ukrainian Anhelina Kalinina, the No 12 seed (6-2, 7-6 (5)) earlier in the tournament.
In the previous round, Ostapenko, ranked No 16, won against Ukrainian Marta Kostyuk (6-2, 6-3).
