Guadalajara: Caroline Garcia reaches quarter-finals

Frenchwoman Caroline Garcia, the No 3 seed, moved into the quarter-finals of the Guadalajara Open Akron by winning against American Hailey Baptiste 7-5, 6-4 on Wednesday evening.
Garcia, ranked No 11, will face the winner of the match between Russian Veronika Kudermetova, the No 7 seed, and Belarusian Victoria Azarenka, the No 10 seed, next.
The world No 11 improves to 32-21 on the season and 22-14 on hard courts with her victory, which lasted one hour and 32 minutes.
Garcia converted all her break points and won 19 of 28 second-serve return points. She saved four of six break points and rallied from a break down in the second set to finish off the 21-year-old American in straight sets.
Baptiste had two break points that would have given her a 5-4 lead in the second set, but couldn’t convert. Garcia won the final six points of the match and broke at love to finish off her win.
The Frenchwoman edged out Belarusian Aliaksandra Sasnovich (4-6, 7-6 (5), 6-4) in the previous round.
Earlier in the tournament, Baptiste, ranked No 174, defeated Mexican wildcard Lya Isabel Fernandez Olivares (6-2, 6-1) and edged out No 16 seed Karolina Pliskova (7-6 (5), 5-7, 7-6 (4)).
