Canadian Leylah Fernandez reached the last 16 of the Guadalajara Open Akron by winning against Belgian Elise Mertens, the No 13 seed, 6-3, 6-4 on Tuesday night.
Fernandez, ranked No 74, will play the winner of the match between No 4 seed Madison Keys and Emma Navarro next.
The 21-year-old Canadian beat American qualifier Asia Muhammad (6-1, 6-3) ahead of her victory.
In the previous round, Mertens, ranked No 29, defeated Yanina Wickmayer (7-6 (4), 6-2).
