Japanese Moyuka Uchijima edged out Jodie Burrage 6-4, 4-6, 6-4 to advance to the semi-finals of the Golden Gate Open at Stanford on Thursday evening.
Uchijima, ranked No 191, will play the winner of the match between Chinese qualifier Yafan Wang and Japanese qualifier Mai Hontama next.
The 22-year-old Japanese won against American lucky loser Hailey Baptiste (7-6 (3), 6-2) and No 4 seed Nao Hibino (7-5, 2-0 ret.) earlier in the tournament.
In the previous rounds, Burrage, ranked No 101, beat Russian Diana Shnaider, the No 5 seed (6-4, 6-2) and American Kayla Day (2-6, 7-6 (3), 6-3).
