Garbine Muguruza announced as new tournament director for WTA Finals
The 2021 WTA Finals champion becomes the first former player to hold the position
Former world No 1 Garbine Muguruza has been announced as the new tournament director for the WTA Finals this year.
The Spaniard only retired from professional tennis officially in April 2024, having not played since January 2023. She becomes the first former player to hold the position of tournament director at the WTA Finals, with Muguruza having won the event herself in 2021.
The WTA Tour announced Muguruza’s role on Wednesday, stating that she would, “work with WTA, the Saudi Tennis Federation and the Ministry of Sport to oversee strategic planning and delivery of the event.”
Last year’s WTA Finals came under significant criticism for their organisation. Courts in Cancun were poorly prepared, and the tournament was hosted during hurricane season on Mexico’s east coast.
The 2024 event will be held in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, with Muguruza hoping to create a different experience this season.
“I feel very privileged to be able to contribute to the future of this great sport as tournament director of the WTA Finals Riyadh,” Muguruza said. “I know how special this event is for our top players, and l’ve also seen its potential to inspire communities all over the world.
“I’m excited to work with a great team to present a showcase for women’s tennis that not only grows tennis but encourages all fans, and especially girls and women, to pursue their dreams.”
