Kazakh Yulia Putintseva moved into the last eight of the Galaxy Holding Group Guangzhou Open when Dane Clara Tauson retired on Wednesday.
Putintseva, ranked No 81, led 3-6, 7-6 (5), 0-0 when Tauson, ranked No 76, pulled out on Wednesday afternoon.
The Kazakh will play German Tatjana Maria, the No 3 seed, next.
In the previous round, Yulia Putintseva defeated Chinese wildcard Xiaodi You (6-4, 6-0).
The 20-year-old Dane won against No 6 seed Linda Fruhvirtova (6-2, 7-6 (6)) in the previous round.
