American Taylor Townsend defeated Romanian Ana Bogdan, the No 3 seed, 6-0, 6-4 to move into the quarter-finals of the Firenze Ladies Open on Wednesday afternoon.
Townsend, ranked No 168, will face the winner of the match between wildcard Matilde Paoletti and Nuria Brancaccio next.
In the previous round, the American benefited from the abandonment of Croat Ana Konjuh (5-2).
Bogdan, ranked No 59, won against Italian qualifier Deborah Chiesa (6-2, 6-1) during the 32.
