Italian Jasmine Paolini, the No 3 seed, advanced to the quarter-finals of the Eastbourne Open when Belgian Elise Mertens retired on Wednesday evening at Devonshire Park Lawn Club.
Paolini, ranked No 7, led 5-2 when Mertens, ranked No 33, pulled out on Wednesday evening at Devonshire Park Lawn Club.
The Italian will face Katie Boulter next.
In the previous round of the Eastbourne tournament, the Belgian won against wildcard Yuriko Lily Miyazaki (6-1, 6-2).
