Badosa sets up Rybakina meeting in last 16 of Dubai Open
Paula Badosa won against Elise Mertens 6-2, 6-1 on Tuesday and will face Kazakh Elena Rybakina, the No 6 seed, next
Spaniard Paula Badosa, the No 9 seed, defeated Belgian Elise Mertens 6-2, 6-1 to advance to the last 16 of the Dubai Open at The Aviation Club Tennis Centre on Tuesday.
Badosa’s effort against Mertens lasted an hour, five minutes.
She hit four aces, averaging 87 percent on first-serve points, and broke her Belgian opponent four times, with an 83 percent conversion rate of second-serve return.
Badosa, ranked No 10, will face Kazakh Elena Rybakina, the No 6 seed, next. This will be her eighth on-court meeting with Rybakina and she leads 4-3 in the head-to-head.
The Spaniard won against New Zealander Lulu Sun (6-3, 6-4) ahead of her victory.
In the previous round of the Dubai tournament, Mertens, ranked No 31, won against Canadian Leylah Fernandez (6-2, 6-2).
