The 2024 WTA Finals brought disappointment for Czech Barbora Krejcikova not only through the on-court results but also the off-court business as she found herself being the subject of ridicule on live TV.

The season-ending championships concluded with American Coco Gauff‘s crowning victory over China’s Zheng Qinwen in the title clash in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, on Saturday (November 9) but the drama has spilled over with noted tennis analyst Jon Wertheim offending Krejcikova.

This happened during Tennis Channel‘s coverage of the semi-finals which saw Krejcikova losing to Zheng in straight sets (6-3, 7-5). Wertheim, seemingly unaware of being on air, compared his forehead to that of the No 8 seed before the final-four clash unfolded.

Hours later, Krejcikova took to X (formerly Twitter) and condemned Wertheim’s remarks.

“You might have heard about the recent comments made on Tennis Channel during the WTA Finals coverage that focused on my appearance rather than my performance,” the reigning Wimbledon champion wrote. “As an athlete who has dedicated herself to this sport, it was disappointing to see this type of unprofessional commentary. This isn’t the first time something like this is happening in sports world.

“I’ve often chosen not to speak up, but I believe it’s time to address the need for respect and professionalism in sports media. These moments distract from the true essence of sport and the dedication all athletes bring to the field. I love tennis deeply, and I want to see it represented in a way that honours the commitment we make to compete at this level.”

Wertheim apologises

Wertheim, a respected and experienced broadcaster, issued his own apology on Twitter, saying he had also apologised to Krejcikova herself.

Wertheim said he had not realised he was live on air, but said that was no excuse.

“I realise, I am not the victim here,” he wrote. “It was neither professional nor charitable, nor reflective of the person I strive to be. I am accountable. I own this. I am sorry.”
