San Diego Open: Ostapenko upsets eighth seed Alexandrova to reach last 16
The Latvian will play American Danielle Collins in the next round
Latvian Jelena Ostapenko reached the last 16 of the Cymbiotika San Diego Open by edging out Russian Ekaterina Alexandrova, the No 8 seed, 7-6 (3), 6-7 (6), 7-5 on Tuesday.
The former French Open champion is coming off a quarter-final finish at the US Open and has risen to No 16 in the rankings, which puts her ahead of Alexandrova, who is ranked 19th (the seedings are based on last week’s rankings).
Ostapenko, ranked No 16, will next play fellow big-hitter Danielle Collins, from the United States, next.
The Latvian has won both the previous matches between the two, including a three-set win in Abu Dhabi this year.
