American wildcard Sofia Kenin advanced to the last four of the Cymbiotika San Diego Open by winning against Russian Anastasia Potapova 6-2, 6-3 on Thursday.
Kenin, ranked No 93 in the world and a former Australian Open champion, will play the winner of the match between Greek Maria Sakkari, the No 3 seed, and American qualifier Emma Navarro next.
This is only the second time this season that Kenin has reached the semi-finals on tour, the first coming in Hobart at the beginning of the year.
In the earlier rounds, the American beat Russian Veronika Kudermetova, the No 6 seed (6-4, 6-4) and wildcard Katie Volynets (1-6, 6-4, 6-2).
Potapova, ranked No 27, edged out American Alycia Parks (6-2, 5-7, 6-4) and defeated Tunisian Ons Jabeur, the top seed (6-4, 7-6 (4)) in her previous matches this week.
