Collins cruises past Alexandrova, into Miami Open title match against Rybakina
Danielle Collins remained red hot with a straight-set defeat of Ekaterina Alexandrova in the Miami semi-finals on Thursday. The American will battle Elena Rybakina for the title on Saturday.
Danielle Collins continued her dominant run through the Miami Open with a 6-3, 6-2 victory over Ekaterina Alexandrova during semi-final action on Thursday night. Collins set up a showdown for the title with Elena Rybakina after one hour and 15 minutes.
The 30-year-old almost doubled Alexandrova’s winners count (21 to 11) and generated 12 break chances, four of which she converted. Alexandrova’s lone service break came early in the opening set, but she was unable to be competitive thereafter. Collins won 11 of the last 14 games in the match at held at love while serving at 5-2 in the second to clinch victory.
Collins dominant en route to first WTA 1000 final
Both Collins and Alexandrova were looking for their first appearance in the championship match of a WTA 1000. Each woman was playing in a semi-final at this level for the second time.
This is without question one of the best tournaments of Collins’ life, and it has come in convincing fashion — to say the least. Since dropping her first set of the fortnight to Bernarda Pera, the American has been absolutely on fire. She has reeled off 12 sets in a row by scores of 6-1, 6-1, 6-2, 6-2, 6-1, 6-2, 6-3, 6-2, 6-3, 6-2, 6-3 and 6-2.
“I’ve had a couple of good years here, but this is definitely the most memorable,” said Collins, who reached the Miami semis in 2018 and the quarters in 2022.
Rybakina will be playing in her second consecutive Miami final, having been runner-up to Petra Kvitova last spring.
