Coco Gauff splits from coach Brad Gilbert in wake of US Open loss

World No 6 Coco Gauff has split with coach Brad Gilbert, who she worked with from mid-2023 until recently.

“Thanks to Coco Gauff and the entire team for an absolutely amazing summer run in 2023 and for 14 months of incredible team effort,” Gilbert wrote in a post on X on Wednesday.

“Coco, at just 20 years young, your future is incredibly bright, and I wish you nothing but continued success ahead. 

“I’m excited for the next chapter in my coaching career.”

The news comes off the back of a torrid run of form for Gauff, with the American failing to make a final on the WTA Tour since she defended her Auckland title in the first event of the season.

Most recently, she lost in the fourth round of both Wimbledon and the US Open, falling to compatriot Emma Navarro in the latter as she sprayed 19 double faults.

Initially, the partnership between Gauff and Gilbert had been immensely fruitful.

The two teamed up on the back of a disappointing first-round defeat at Wimbledon 2023. What followed was a stark transformation, as Gauff won 18 of her next 19 matches, claiming her maiden WTA 500, WTA 1000 and Grand Slam titles.

Gilbert has coached numerous past champions, with Andy Murray, Andy Roddick and Andre Agassi among the names the 63-year-old has partnered with.

Gauff is yet to speak at length about the pair’s split, but did respond to Gilbert’s announcement, saying, “Thank you! We had an incredible run and I wish you all the best in the future!”

It is unclear what either will do now that their partnership has ended.
