Cornet advances to semi-finals in Cleveland
Alize Cornet won against Shuai Zhang 6-4, 6-2 on Thursday evening and will face Belarusian Aliaksandra Sasnovich, the No 7 seed, in the next round
Frenchwoman Alize Cornet, the No 8 seed, advanced to the last four of the Tennis in the Land by winning against Chinese Shuai Zhang 6-4, 6-2 at Cleveland’s iconic Jacobs Pavilion at Nautica in Flats West Bank on Thursday evening.
Cornet, ranked No 37, will face Belarusian Aliaksandra Sasnovich, the No 7 seed, next. She saved all five break points she faced against Zhang, and cracked six aces against two double-faults.
The 32-year-old is into her second semi-final of the season with her win – she fell to Caroline Garcia in the Bad Homburg semis earlier this summer.
In the previous rounds, the Frenchwoman beat Ukrainian Dayana Yastremska (6-2, 6-1) and Dane Clara Tauson (6-3, 7-6 (1)).
Zhang, ranked No 35, defeated Czech Katerina Siniakova (6-2, 6-1) and Italian Martina Trevisan, the second seed (W/O) earlier in the tournament.
