Cleveland Open: Siniakova books spot in semi-finals against top seed Haddad Maia
The No 3 seeded Czech defeated American Peyton Stearns 1-6, 6-3, 6-4 in the quarter-finals on Thursday
No 3 seed Katerina Siniakova reached the semi-finals of the Cleveland Open by edging out American Peyton Stearns, the No 6 seed, 1-6, 6-3, 6-4 at Jacobs Pavilion on Thursday.
The Czech player lost nine of the first 10 games in the matcha s Stearns built a 6-1, 3-0 lead. From thee, Siniakova took the next six games in a row to win the second set and then got the decisive break in the 10th game of the final set to win the match in a little over two hours.
Siniakova, ranked No 36, will face Brazilian Beatriz Haddad Maia, the top seed, next.
The Czech, who won the Olympic mixed doubles gold medal earlier this month, edged out Japanese qualifier Sayaka Ishii (6-7 (5), 6-3, 7-6 (5)) and Spanish qualifier Jessica Bouzas Maneiro (2-6, 6-4, 7-6 (2)) in the previous rounds of the tournament.
Earlier in the week, Stearns, ranked No 47, defeated Japanese Moyuka Uchijima (6-0, 1-6, 6-1) and Spaniard Sara Sorribes Tormo (6-3, 6-2).
