Cleveland Open: Kessler powers into semi-finals

McCartney Kessler won against Arantxa Rus 6-4, 6-2 on Thursday evening and will face Russian Anastasia Potapova, the No 5 seed, in the next round

American wildcard McCartney Kessler beat Dutchwoman Arantxa Rus 6-4, 6-2 to advance to the semi-finals of the Cleveland Open at Jacobs Pavilion on Thursday evening.

Kessler, ranked No 98, will play Russian Anastasia Potapova, the No 5 seed, next.

Earlier in the tournament, the American edged out wildcard Katrina Scott (6-1, 4-6, 6-4) and won against Chinese Xinyu Wang, the No 4 seed (3-6, 6-4, 6-2).

Rus, ranked No 95, defeated Italian Lucia Bronzetti (6-3, 7-6 (4)) and Bulgarian Viktoriya Tomova, the No 7 seed (6-3, 6-3) in the previous rounds of the Cleveland tournament.
