Clara Tauson continues pulsating run in Dubai, defeating Muchova for maiden WTA 1000 final
Clara Tauson won against Karolina Muchova 6-4, 6-7 (4), 6-3 on Friday evening and will play Russian Mirra Andreeva, the No 12 seed, in the final
Dane Clara Tauson defeated No 14 seed Karolina Muchova 6-4, 6-7 (4), 6-3 to move into the final of the Dubai Open at The Aviation Club Tennis Centre on Friday evening.
The Dane, who took out world No 1 Aryna Sabalenka in the round of 16, has now defeated multiple top 20 talents at the same event for the first time.
Tauson, ranked No 38, will face Russian Mirra Andreeva, the No 12 seed, in Saturday’s final at Dubai.
Tauson, the 2025 Auckland champion, moved into the WTA lead with 15 wins on the season, and improved to 5-1 in WTA semi-finals.
She was forced to keep her cool against signficant pressure from Muchova. She cracked nine aces and saved seven of nine break points in the two hour and 52-minute contest.
She saved three break points at 2-2 in the final set and went on to win the final three games of the contest. Muchova hit a shot of the year candidate in that game – a tweener lob winner that brought her to deuce – but Tauson didn’t blink an eye as she finished off the hold.
“What can I say? Muchova is such a great player … I don’t know how I won today, but I tried to keep my cool and play some great tennis.”
The 22-year-old Dane won against Slovak Rebecca Sramkova (7-6 (7), 6-0), Ukrainian Elina Svitolina (7-6 (5), 3-6, 7-6 (4)), Belarusian Aryna Sabalenka, the top seed (6-3, 6-2) and Linda Noskova (7-6 (4), 6-4) in the previous rounds of the Dubai tournament.
Earlier in the tournament, Muchova, ranked No 17, won against Dutch qualifier Suzan Lamens (6-2, 6-2), wildcard Emma Raducanu (7-6 (6), 6-4), American McCartney Kessler (6-3, 1-6, 7-6 (5)) and Romanian wildcard Sorana Cirstea (6-2, 7-5).
Dubai WTA 1000, other semi-final result (The Aviation Club Tennis Centre, hard, USD 3.664.963):
- Mirra Andreeva beat Elena Rybakina (6): 6-4, 4-6, 6-3
