Russian Liudmila Samsonova advanced to the last 16 of the Citi Open by beating Belgian Elise Mertens, the No 5 seed, 7-6 (4), 6-4 on Tuesday night.
Samsonova, ranked No 60, will face the winner of the match between Australian Ajla Tomljanovic and American Sloane Stephens next.
