US Open champion Raducanu kicks off American summer with straight sets win
Raducanu beats Louisa Chirico in straight sets and will meet Colombian Camila Osorio in the next round of the Citi Open in Washington
Emma Raducanu, the 19-year-old Brit who won the US Open as a qualifier last year, kicked off her American summer swing with a morale-boosting straight sets win over American qualifier Louisa Chirico at the Citi Open on Tuesday evening.
Seeded second this week, Raducanu defeated Chirico 6-4, 6-2 in one hour and 27 minutes.
The Brit saved two of the three break points on her serve while converting 4 of 10 break point chances she earned on Chirico’s serve.
Ranked No 10 in the world, the Brit will next meet Colombian Camila Osorio in the second round. Osorio defeated former Australian Open champion Sofia Kenin 7-6, 6-1.
